    Director of the WORD Studio Melody Denny shared how open-source artificial intelligence can encourage students to think critically about writing in an article published by WWNYTV.com on January 19. 
    Denny has taught first-year writing classes for two decades as well as technical writing and environmental writing and rhetoric. Her research specializes in the analysis of talk between tutors and students. She holds a master’s degree in English from Northeastern State University and a Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric from Oklahoma State University. 
    Associate Professor of History Howard Eissenstat examined Turkey’s stance in negotiations on Swedish and Finnish accession to NATO during an interview published by France24.com on January 4. 
    Eissenstats‘s recent work has focused increasingly on contemporary Turkish domestic and foreign policy, especially on issues of rule-of-law, minority rights, and the reshaping of political culture under the Justice and Development Party (AKP). At St. Lawrence, he teaches courses on Middle Eastern history and politics and in the First-Year Seminar (FYS). In addition to traditional academic work, Eissenstat served for over a decade as a Turkey Country Specialist for Amnesty International-USA. He has lectured at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. military, and the Canadian Foreign Service Institute, as well as given testimony to the Canadian Senate and offered briefings to Congressional Committees.
    Visiting Assistant Professor of Education Elisa Van Kirk weighed in on professional athlete Brittney Griner’s return to America and the compensation of female athletes in an article published by TimesUnion.com on December 27. 
    Van Kirk holds a doctorate of education in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University and, after serving as head coach of the Saints softball team from 2012 to 2017, now teaches education courses and in the First-Year Program at St. Lawrence.
    Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Atal Ahmadzai leveraged his expertise in conflict to provide insight into the Taliban regime and Sharia Law in a co-authored article published by The Diplomat on December 9. 
    Ahmadzai’s research focuses on the thematic intersection of environment-conflict-development. His scholarly publications are in the areas of human development, global governance, and terrorism. His regional expertise is in South, Central, and Western Asia. Ahmadzai holds a Ph.D. in Global Affairs from Rutgers University.
    Brenda Papineau ’02, M’06,’15 was featured in an article about her appointment to Director of Native American Affairs published by InformNNY.com on December 6. 
    Papineau, a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe from Akwesasne, will collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and offices across campus to develop and strengthen relations with Indigenous communities regionally and nationally, including programming to support the enrollment, retention, and success of Indigenous students. Papineau will also serve as the University’s liaison with external organizations to identify opportunities for partnerships across communities.
