Skanska kicks off new year with slew of project wins – Construction Dive

The contractor touted over $900 million in recent awards across academic and infrastructure projects.
Skanska USA, the American arm of the Sweden-based contractor and developer, has announced a slew of new projects. They are:
Award: Jamaica Bus Depot
Value: $480 million
Location: Queens, New York
Client: Metropolitan Transit Authority
On Jan. 10, Skanska announced it had won the $480 million contract to build a new Jamaica Bus Depot. The project includes a LEED-certified depot and accompanying administrative building, according to a release.
The project is part of New York City’s goals to transition to a 100% electric bus fleet. Construction — which begins this month and is expected to end in late 2026 — will include the demolition of the existing Jamaica Bus Depot.
The new, one-story building will include 272 bus parking spaces, three bus washing lanes, two chassis washing stations, an interior washing station, 15 maintenance bays and rooftop parking. The three-story administrative building will connect to the depot via an enclosed bridge.
Award: Academic commons building
Value: $103 million
Location: Petersburg, Virginia
Client: Virginia State University
Skanska announced Jan. 13 that it had won a contract to build a 57,000-square-foot academic commons building for Virginia State University. 
The facility will include classrooms, labs, broadcast production spaces, multipurpose auditoriums, art studios, remote learning technology and faculty offices. 
The project will also include the demolition of a hall and gymnasium, and the new building will include an elevated running track, basketball courts and a six-lane, 25-yard competition pool.
Construction begins this month and will finish in 2025.
Award: Data center
Value: $98 million
Location: Phoenix
Client: Withheld
Skanska announced Jan. 12 it had signed a contract with an undisclosed data center operator to build a new center in Phoenix worth $98 million. The two-story data center and office building will total over 860,000 square feet.
The data center will be Skanska’s second project on the 7-acre campus and the first under a master contract agreement. Construction will finish in November, according to a release.
Award: Middle school
Value: $88 million
Location: Fuquay–Varina, North Carolina
Client: Wake County Public Schools
Skanska announced Jan. 11 Wake County Public Schools had contracted the builder to construct a new, 242,546-square-foot middle school in Fuquay–Varina, North Carolina.
The project will include an outdoor athletic facility, two gymnasiums, classroom spaces, a theater, media center and dining facility on 65 acres of land.
Work began on the project in May and will finish in 2024.
Skanska USA has regional headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. It has completed nearly $3 billion worth of work in North Carolina and Virginia over the last 10 years, according to the release, and has more than $640 million of work in progress in the two states.
Award: Life sciences building
Value: $83.6 million
Location: Fairfax, Virginia
Client: George Mason University
Skanska announced Jan. 10 it had signed a contract with George Mason University to build a new life sciences and engineering building. 
The 43,000-square-foot building will add new specialized labs, classrooms and administrative offices on GMU’s Prince William County Science and Technology Campus. Users will include students in engineering and computing, science, education and human development and visual and performing arts.
Work began in December, and Skanska expects to complete the building in 2025.
Award: Grand Central Station refurbishment
Value: $74.2 million
Location: New York City
Client: MTA
On Jan. 11, Skanska announced the MTA awarded it a circulation improvement project to Grand Central’s 42nd Street Station.
Work will include the construction of a newly mined tunnel passageway. Additionally, Skanska will build new stairways and widen existing staircases, upgrade the station’s fire alarm system and repair existing tunnels within the station.
Construction began in December, and will conclude toward the end of 2024.
