It’s important for children to be aware of online safety issues, but it’s also beneficial if teachers get involved in conversations about these topics.

Children take technology classes, surf websites for school projects, and use the Internet in their leisure time for all kinds of purposes, so it’s a great idea for teachers to include cyber security discussions in their lessons.

Cybercrime has become more of an issue than traditional types of crimes. As technology has advanced, so too have crimes like burglary, larcenies, and even violent crime. Because criminals now have a new way to break in to our homes, they’ve been able to steal much more than just physical possessions.

So think about kids nowadays ‘€“ most have been born right into this digital age and have never known a world without the Internet. They see the Internet as this great big thing with tons of information and answers to everything. So they must be made aware that the Internet has flaws; that people with bad intentions can seep through the cracks and get to them and their personal information if they are not careful.

Cyber Security in the Classroom

Some schools may not start teaching about cyber security until middle or high school, but toddlers are using tablets just as often as teens and they need to know what to look out for. This may not be something that’s easy for young children to grasp, but fortunately there are ways to make it more kid friendly like with the comic, The Cynja , an internet security game that lets kids learn by doing, that parents or teachers can easily monitor.

Teaching kids about cyber security is mostly taking those rules you’ve taught them about the real world, and applying them to cyberspace . Don’t talk to strangers ‘€“ don’t chat with or accept friend requests from people you don’t know; don’t take candy from a stranger ‘€“ don’t accept any sort of free prize from someone you don’t know; and most certainly don’t share your personal information with anyone on the Internet. You should also teach them to create sound passwords and not use the same one for everything.

For teens and pre-teents, it might be a good idea to share some real examples of internet sharing gone wrong. Teens like to post pictures of themselves, who they are with and what they’re wearing on social media. But they usually don’t realize that what they post online can be viewed by anyone – their teachers, their principals, their families. Kids often tell each other things they shouldn’t, and parents hear about them. And there are ways that strangers can hack into someone else’s account and see their private messages. Deleting a post is not as easy as it seems, because once something goes online, there are ways to get it back even if it has been deleted.

Teens need to understand that this can greatly affect them now, and in the future when it comes to getting accepted into college and applying for job opportunities. A simple Google search of a potential future college administrator or employer could turn their shiny resume and credentials into a “No” because of something they posted five years ago.

Tech Features That Pose Risks

There are other basic technologies that can put children at risk. They should be made aware of them as well. GPS and location services help us pinpoint our exact locations, alerting predators. Posting that they’re home alone or even out of town shows predators that they or the things they own are in a vulnerable position Predators have even found a way to hack into computers and steal your personal info even if the camera is turned off, so keep the screen shut when not using it, or cover the camera.

Online meeting people has become more common these days, and although it may seem like an exciting way to make new friends and start relationships, you should restrict it to responsible adults. If you meet up with someone you’ve met online, don’t let it get out of hand. Tell them not to go alone, but if they insist, they shouldn’t go alone.

All things considered, you want to be the student’s friend. You want to let your students know that if anything were ever to happen online, they could talk to you or an administrator at their school about it. Be firm about consequences for cyberbullying and inappropriate internet behavior, but also ensure their safety by making sure they know they can come to you if anything were ever to happen. If they don’t say anything, things could really get out of hand and put them in danger.
