Schools across northern England, Scotland and Wales are closed due to safety concerns amid “heavy” snow while yellow warnings for snow and ice issued by the Met Office remain in place until 12pm today
Dozens of schools across the UK are closed today as bad weather continues around the country.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice issued by the Met Office remain in place until 12pm today, as schools cope with "heavy snow."
Areas across Scotland, Flintshire in Wales and Staffordshire in England are known to have been affected. There are over 50 schools closed in Wales, with 21 of them in Flintshire.
Biddulph High School in Stoke-on-Trent said the "school is unable to staff the school safely" as the weather resulted in closures on the surrounding roads.
A total of 19 schools have been closed in Staffordshire alone this morning, as temperatures across the country went to -4C or -3C in towns and cities, and even -8C in some rural areas.
The weather warnings are in place across western parts of the UK, Wales and the north of Scotland run until noon today while the ice warning for the southwest of England lasts until 10am.
Moorside High School, in Cellarhead, added: "Due to heavy snow on our site and surrounding areas, school is closed today."
Treacherous conditions on Staffordshire roads including Keele Bank, the A51 and A50 have been reported. Most of the snow is reportedly affecting North Staffordshire and areas like Biddulph, Endon, Sneyd Green, and Talke.
Problems have also been seen in Lancashire, where Sacred Heart RC Primary school said they had no water or heating.
They said: "This morning we have discovered that we have no water or heating. We presume this is linked to the works being carried out on Red Lane. We unfortunately have no choice other than to close the school for the day. Hopefully, we will reopen tomorrow."
One school in Macclesfield has remained open, but informed parents that children would be escorted across the snowy drive from 7:30am.
If parents are unsure if their child's school is closed, they can check the government's tool and type in their postcode here.
A level three cold weather alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is also in place until 9am on Friday. It warned of conditions that "could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services."
The Met Office said: "As well as some low temperatures overnight, scattered showers will continue to affect northern and western areas. These showers are likely to be a combination of rain, sleet and snow, with some accumulations possible, especially over high ground."
